The best way to describe an HID headlight is to compare it to a more conventional halogen headlight. A halogen bulb consists of a wire filament surrounded by an inert gas. When electrical current is applied to the filament, it glows brightly to produce light. Contrast that with an HID bulb which has no filament, but instead consists of xenon gas, mercury, and metal halide salts. The xenon gas is ignited by an arc of high-voltage current and glows brightly. Also, the high voltage is supplied by a ballast, so in these respects it is like a fluorescent light. HID's are original equipment generally found on luxury and exotic cars but are progressively finding their way into the mainstream. For example, the 2004 Mazda 3s at ~$17k will include HID's.
Hailed as "the revolutionary illuminiation product of 21st century", HID is an English abbreviation for High Intensity Discharge Lamp. It is composed of ballast and lamp. The working principle for HID: through ballasts, it enables voltage at dc 12V on vehicle to rise to 23,000V instantly and enables inert gas-Xenon to be activated and dissociated electricity. It generates light source that is near to sunlight color at noon, then steadies in 85V and keeps discharging. HID lamp has many features, as follows:
A. Super brightness: its luminous flux (3,000Lm) is 3 times as that of the halogen tungsten lamp (800Lm), so that it can emit more light.
B. Extremely long life-span: The halogen lamp can only last 400 hours continuously at most, while HID Xenon lamp's life-span is 3,000 hours, which is the same with the Automobile's life (the European standard).
C. Excellent power saving: Halogen lamp usually consumes about 55-65W electric power on average. But HID Xenon lamp only consumes 35W, which can draw less power from your vehicles electrical system and obviously improve the performance of the vehicles.
D. Brilliant colour tempreture: Compared to 3,000-4,200K for halogen lamp, The colour temperature of HID Xenon lamp is approximately 5,000-8,000K, wich is comfortable to our eyes, and also benefit for safe driving.
